NOTES:
Selected quotes from Pat as he talked about his one way ticket destination:
“What happens in the mind, affects what happens in reality.”
“I don’t want the opportunities that come about today to become my what if’s tomorrow.”
“[The film] Back to the Future also taught me…what you do now changes your story. The actions we take now determine what our future is.”
Pat Flynn on giving things away for free:
“When you get something for free, for example, and it’s amazing and it blows your mind and you just cannot believe that it’s free, then when you see that that same person who offered you that much value is charging for something, you can’t help but think ‘oh my gosh, if the free stuff is this amazing, I can’t imagine how great and how much valuable the paid stuff is’.”
“The law of reciprocity comes into play here [as well]. When you give something away for free, people are more than likely looking for ways to pay you back. And not necessarily with money, but there are multiple ways to pay you back for that great value that you’ve provided, again, for free, such as sharing your name with somebody else or forwarding that email to somebody else, or just a shout out on social media.”
“I’m a big believer of serving first…your earnings are a byproduct of how well you serve others.”
“If you can give away some of your best stuff for free, that’s going to get people to come to you and notice you first and then you can just continue to provide that value, build a relationship for them over time and then hopefully have a transaction that’s a win on both sides in the future.”
Pat Flynn on the importance of fitness:
“Fitness is the most important thing for entrepreneurs.”
“The number one tip for being productive is exercise.”
“It’s your mind and body that’s living and interacting with others and being creative and creating that output that you put into the world. And if you think of it [your body] like a machine and you don’t take care of it, it’s going to wear out or it’s not going to do the job that it’s supposed to.”
Steven referenced the Beginning Within Podcast during the fitness conversation.
Pat on fame:
“I do speak at a lot of conferences and in most of these conferences I have a number of listeners and followers and subscribers who come and watch and they want to talk to me afterwards and I feel like I owe it to them. I remember what it was like on the other end when I was at a conference and I didn’t know anybody and then I saw somebody speak and I wanted to talk to them and sometimes those people would leave before I got a chance to talk to them and I always felt kind of upset about that.”
Pat on fear:
“The fear is the result of the resistance that comes in our brain when we are trying to do something different or uncomfortable. And a lot of times when we try to achieve these big goals that we have or reach these milestones that will put us in that uncomfortable situation and that’s where that fear comes into play.”
“Now I actually look toward that fear. I go to it. That’s exactly why I speak on stage all the time and why I’m so happy that I still want to throw up before I go on stage every time! Because to me that means that this is still important to me. That this is something that actually matters. And when it matters, I’ll put in the work to make it great. I would be more scared if I just was able to speak no worries at all, because then I would wonder, well, is this actually something meaningful to me.”
“So, every time I’m pushing myself in my business trying to do something different, I look for that fear and see, well, what can I do that will sort of push myself beyond where I’ve ever been before. Where can I get a little bit scared, so that I can try something new and actually get big results from that, coz that’s where the results really come from, it’s sort of outside that comfort zone where all that fear lives.”
Pat Flynn on failure:
“Now, I find failure is amazing because that means I’m at a point where I know that that didn’t work and I can try something different.”
“The faster you fail, the faster you’re going to be able to get on your feet and go in the right direction.”
“I welcome failure.”
Pat Flynn on podcasting:
“For producing podcasts, the big tip I’d give people is just to make sure you have your systems in place so that you can get to the point where you can just record and focus on the conversation. It’s really difficult to manage everything that’s all involved with the podcast – from the interviews to the editing to the posting. Eventually get to a point – you may not be there yet, and of course that requires some resources to make happen, but – you could even be more strategic with doing it all yourself, just making sure that hopefully you can get to a point, where like I’m at now, where I can truly focus on the guest that’s on the show with me or the content that I’m providing and not have to worry about anything else.”
“If you do interview somebody that somebody else has interviewed, please make sure you do a little bit of research to understand that you have to try and come at it at a different angle or with different questions, which is why, again, I love The One Way Ticket Show and that angle.” [Thanks Pat Flynn!]
“I think that people always think they have to have their A-Listers on the show in their industry where, I’ve found that the non A-Listers sometimes provide the better content and are the more interesting stories and they’re interesting not just to me as the interviewer, but to the listeners because they can more relate to those people. They feel like they’re just maybe one or two steps ahead as opposed to an A-Lister who might be world’s ahead and in another completely different universe sometimes and that’s not always encouraging. But what is encouraging is hearing someone just like them who’s just a little further ahead, find success, or somebody with a great story that they can then pull that inspiration from.”
